Why was the Tet Offensive described as a turning point?
The US used their military and technology to defeat Veitcong. But they were seen to have lost the war becuase it took them 3 weeks to win. The public lost support for the US military
What happens during the My Lai Massacre?
American soldiers tortured,raped and killed more than 500 innocent civilians of Veitcong knowing that they were innocent.
How did the My Lai Massacre come to public attention?
An American veteran published a detailed story about it. The US successfully covered it up for a year before he published his story
What impact did the My Lai Massacre have on the public?
People no longer trusted the US soilders in control of the military. An anti-war movement grew and protests happened. US citizens were angry.
How did the media influence the public opinion of the war?
They could see the horrors of war and stopped supporting it.
What happened during the Kent State Massacre in 1970?
There were protests against more people getting sent to war. Tear bombs were thrown which resulted in 4 deaths and 9 injuries.
What was the draft?
The draft- US soilders called out to African Americans and poor people to join the war. This was seen as racist towards African American citizens
What was the civil right movements?
They fought for equality for African Americans and argued that the draft was racist.
Who is Nixon?
The 4th US President.
What did Nixon promise to do if elected?
End the war in Vietnam
What was Nixon’s policy of Veitnamization?
Train up the AVRN and gradually withdraw US troops from Vietnam so it doesn’t fall to communism
