How did Diem die?
He died because the various military generals wanted power and saw Diem as not fit to lead them. The USA heard of the plot to kill Diem but decided not to warn him resulting in Diem’s assassinated.
What happened in the Gulf of Tonkin?
The USS Maddox was apparently attacked by North Vietnamese torpedo boats in the Gulf of Tonkin. This led to Johnson to call for air strikes on the North Vietnamese patrol boat bases. Two planes are shot down and a US pilot is taken, prisoner.
Who passed the Gulf of Tonkin resolution.
The Congress, it was passed in retaliation for the attacks on the USS Maddox and the aeroplanes shot down.
What did operation Rolling Thunder hope to achieve?
It hoped to achieve massive pressure on North Vietnam’s communist leaders and reduce their capacity to wage war against Saigon.
