Law 1: Never Outshine the Master
Always make those above you feel superior. In your desire to please or impress them, do not go too far in displaying your talents or you might accomplish the opposite.
Law 2: Never Put Too Much Trust in Friends, Learn How to Use Enemies
Friends can be unpredictable and may act out of emotion or betrayal, whereas former enemies, once they are turned into allies, can be more reliable because they have more to prove. It’s advised to be wary of the intentions of friends and instead, harnessing the diligence and drive of a former adversary for more predictable and potent alliances.
Law 3: Conceal Your Intentions
Keep your intentions obscure to prevent others from thwarting your plans. By not revealing your goals, you maintain power and control, as others cannot interfere with what they do not understand. This law advises that mystery and deception can be powerful tactics in gaining the upper hand in various situations.
Law 4: Always Say Less than Necessary
When you are trying to impress or influence others, the more you say, the more common you appear and the less in control. Powerful people impress and intimidate by saying less. The more you say, the more likely you are to say something foolish.
Law 5: So Much Depends on Reputation – Guard It with Your Life
Reputation is the cornerstone of power. Through reputation alone, you can intimidate and win; once it slips, however, you are vulnerable and will be attacked on all fronts. Make your reputation unassailable. Always be alert to potential attacks and thwart them before they happen. Meanwhile, learn to destroy your enemies by undermining their own reputations and then standing aside to let public opinion hang them.
Law 6: Court Attention at All Costs
Everything is judged by its appearance; what is unseen counts for nothing. Never let yourself get lost in the crowd or buried in oblivion. Stand out. Be conspicuous at all cost. Make yourself a magnet of attention by appearing larger, more colorful, more mysterious, than the bland and timid masses.
Law 7: Get others to do the work for you, but always take the credit.
One should use the wisdom, knowledge, and legwork of others to further their own cause, thus saving energy and time. By ensuring that the public face of success is yours, you receive the accolade and recognition for achievements, even if they are the result of others’ efforts. It warns against revealing too much of your dependence on your helpers to maintain your power and influence.
