Video 19: Isomers Flashcards
What is a structural( (aka constitutional) isomer?
Share the same molecular formula but have the atomic bonds at different places
(will have different names eg: 1,1-dimethylcyclohexane vs 1,4-dimethylcyclohexane)
What is a stereoisomer?
Compounds with the same molecular formula, same order of connection (base name) but connection of atoms that differ in 3D geometry
What are the two types of stereoisomers?
- Diastereomers
2. Enantiomers
What is a diastereomere?
Stereoisomers that are not mirror images
What is an enantiomer?
Stereoisomers that are non-superposable mirror images of each other
What does cis mean in terms of stereoisomers?
the substituents are on the same side of the ring
What are trans stereoisomers?
Have the substituents on opposite sides of the ring
