Victimology Flashcards
Watts, Bessant and Hill (2008)
historically criminologists paid more attention to the criminals than victims of crime. however they suggest this ended in 1970s when Lea and Young drew attention to the fear and hurt caused by crime to victims
Patterns of victimisation (positivists victimology)
CSEW, ONS have concluded that:
- the older a person gets the more likely they are to be a victim,
- young males 2x as likely to be victims of violence compared to females,
- BAME groups least likely to commit crimes as they have least trust in the police
- women are more likely to be victims of DV, rape and stalking
- 70% of murder victims are male
- poorer house holding are morelikely to be victims of burglary and repeat victimistaion
Evaluation of positivist vistimology
Critisms: often blames the victim, Tombs and Whyte (2007) - critical victimologists arugue white collor state, green crimes are less likely to be in positivist victim surveys as they arent included in the questions
Marxist victimologists argue that victims shown by CSEW are the ones the state chooses to see ignoring those not readily identified as victims
