Vibration Flashcards
What is vibration?
Repetitive, regular variations of a quantity about some equilibrium value.
What energies does vibration vary between?
Potential and kinetic
What are examples of vibrations in the real world?
Chimney stacks, lampposts, mooring lines.
Real springs
Musical instrument reeds or strings.
why should we understand vibration?
To avoid unsafe motion and control intended motion
what are inertial forces?
how difficult it is to start (or stop) the body.
what are damping forces?
the body’s tendency to try and stop moving
what are restoring forces?
the body’s tendency to return to equilibrium
what are excitations?
external actions on the body
what are the 3 types of vibration?
linearity, damping, excitation.
what 4 terms make up an equation of motion?
inertial, damping, restoring and excitations.
what is harmonic motion?
sinusoidal oscillations about an equilibrium value.
