Q

Why does the multiple choice format of Duolingo not exemplify direct learning?

A

Because in reality, you don’t get to choose from a finite list of options when you’re using a new language.

You need to dredge up the correct vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation from your long-term memory, out of infinite options.

Q

What is immersive learning?

What are the benefits?

A

Immersion in an environment where the target skill is practiced.

This creates greater opportunities for contextual practice, and also helps focus on the areas of learning which are actually relevant in the field.

Going to a foreign country to learn a language is the classic example.

Q

When using the flight simulator method for direct learning, which features of the target task must be simulated accurately to have the desired effect?

What are some examples of things that don’t matter?

A

The cognitive features are what is relevant, plus anything that influences the decisions you will make when performing the task in the field.

So if you’re studying for a closed-book exam, making sure you have time pressure and don’t have the answers handy will matter. The clothes you wear will not.
