VFR Limits and Airspace

When can special VFR be requested and what are your responsibilities?

Answer 1

A) By day when VMC does not exist, doesn't unduly delay an IFR flight, for the purpose of entering or exiting a control zone.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Flight is conducted clear of cloud, visibility is not less than 1600m, the flight can be conducted in accordance with CAR 157 with regard to low flying, special VFR is not permitted in class E airspace

What is the flight visibility, and distance from cloud, both horizontally and vertically, in CLASS E airspace for VMC conditions:

1. At or above 10,000FT AMSL
2. Below 10,000FT AMSL

1. 8km Vis, 1500m Horizontally and 1000 ft Vertically clear of cloud.
2. 5000m Vis, 1500m Horizontally and 1000 ft Vertically clear of cloud.

Question 3

What is the flight visibility, and distance from cloud, both horizontally and vertically, in CLASS G airspace for VMC conditions:

1. At or above 10,000FT AMSL
2. Below 10,000FT AMSL
3. At or below, whichever is higher:
   a) 3000 ft AMSL;
   b) 1000 ft AGL

Answer 3

1. 8km Vis, 1500m Horizontally and 1000 ft Vertically clear of cloud.
2. 5000m Vis, 1500m Horizontally and 1000 ft Vertically clear of cloud.
3. 5000m Vis, clear of cloud and in sight of ground or water.

Question 4

What is the flight visibility, and distance from cloud, both horizontally and vertically, in CLASS D airspace for VMC conditions?

Answer 4

5000m Vis, 600m Horizontally clear of cloud, 1000 ft vertically above cloud and 500 ft vertically below cloud.

*ATC may permit Special VFR if above criteria is not met.

Question 5

What is the flight visibility, and distance from cloud, both horizontally and vertically, in CLASS C airspace for VMC conditions:

1. At or above 10,000FT AMSL
2. Below 10,000FT AMSL

Answer 5

1. 8km Vis, 1500m Horizontally and 1000 ft Vertically clear of cloud.
2. 5000m Vis, 1500m Horizontally and 1000 ft Vertically clear of cloud.

*ATC may permit Special VFR if 2. criteria is not met.

1. In VMC
2. When at or below 2000 ft, the pilot is able to navigate by visual reference to the ground or water.
3. At sub-sonic speeds
4. In accordance with the speed restrictions identified in ENR 1.1, Section 65.
