What are the legal requirements for a vet prescription?
- Name, address, telephone, qualifications and signature of prescriber
- Name and address of owner
- Identification and species of animal (and its address if its different to the owner)
- Date - valid for 6 months (28 days for sch 2/3 CD)
- medication - name, quantity, strength, dose - specific administration instructions !!!!
- Necessary warnings, withdrawal period if relevant
- The words “Prescribed under the veterinary cascade for an animal or herd under my care”
What are the extra legal requirements for such 2/3 CDs on a veterinary prescription?
Date is valid for 28 days
Must include the vet’s RCVS registration number
Usual CD requirements apply e.g quantity in words and figures, specific administration instructions, dose, strength etc.
- Must also do a CD register if prescribed a CD schedule 2 (and always do a POM reg as it is a private rx)
Labelling requirements
Normal labelling e.g Drug, dose, instructions Reference number Date Owner name (and animal name) Animal use only " Free format: Owner address Vet details and qualifications Expiry (and any storage instructions/warnings) Species

What is a POM-v?
POM medicines only prescribed by a veterinary surgeon and supplied by a vet surgeon or pharmacist with a written Rx
POM-VPS
POM that can be prescribed and supplied by veterinary surgeon, pharmacist or SQP on oral or written Rx. A written Rx only required if the supplier is not the prescriber
NFA-VPS
medicine for non food producing animals by vet surgeon, Pharmacist or SQP
