Vet med classes - POM-V?
POMs that can only be prescribed by vet and supplied by a vet or pharmacist with an RX
Vet med classes - POM-VPS?
POMs prescribed and supplied by a vet, pharmacist or suitably qualified person on an oral or written RX. Written needed if supplier is not prescriber
Vet med classes - NFS-VPS?
medicine for non food animals – written RX not required
Vet med classes - AVM-GSL?
vet medicine that is available for general sale
What are the legal requirements for veterinary rx’s?
- Prescriber details – name, address, telephone number, qualification and signature (if CD 2-3 RCVS number)
- Owner details – name and address
- Animal ID and species
- Date – same validity as human rx’s (if a repeatable prescription, all supplies must be made within 6 months)
- Medicine details – name, quantity, dose and administration instructions
- Necessary warnings and withdrawal if relevant
- Where appropriate, statement highlighting prescribed under veterinary cascade
- CD requirements if schedule 2/3: ‘the item has been prescribed for an animal or herd under the care of the veterinarian)
- If repeatable, number of times to repeat
How long must veterinary prescriptions be maintained for?
5 years but dont need to be submitted to NHS agency whereas human prescriptions do (keep copy for 2 years)
How many days CD supply is it for vet meds?
28 days (30 days for humans)
What must a vet prescription state if prescribing under the cascade (allows supply of meds that aren’t licensed for animals)?

What key bit of info must a vet medicine label contain that a human one doesnt?
expiry date of product

o Name of medicine o Date of receipt/supply o Batch Number o Quantity o Name/Address of supplier/recipient o Written Rx – record name/address of prescriber and keep copy
