A

A

Prescription-only meds that can be prescribed by a veterinary surgeon, a pharmaist or a suitably qualified person on an oral or written prescription. A written prescription is only required if the supplier is not the prescriber

A

An unlicensed med that does not have marketing authorisation and is not eligible for exemption through the SAES. It can only be prescribed by a veterinary surgeon under the cascade. includes any human medicine used for animals

What is the cascade exemption?

A

ο The cascade exemption within the Veterinary Medicines Regulations allows the supply of medicines that are not licenced for animals. It is unlawful to supply a human medicine against a veterinary prescription unless it is specifically prescribed by a veterinary surgeon and specifically states that it is ‘for administration under the cascade’ or other wording to this effect

What are the Labelling requirements of a vet prescription?

A

ο Name of prescribing veterinary surgeon
ο Name & address of the animal owner
ο Name & address of the pharmacy
ο Identification and species of the animal
ο Date of supply (and expiry date of the product)
ο Name or description of the product or active ingredient and content quantity
ο Dosage & administration instructions
ο If appropriate, any special storage instructions
ο Any necessary warnings for the user (eg administration or disposal)
ο ‘For animal treatment only’
ο Keep out of the reach of children
ο Any applicable withdrawal period (if the animal is part of the food chain the time between stopping the medicine and when it can be safely used for food)

What records must be kept for vet prescriptions?

A

ο Records must be kept for receipt & supply of POM-V and POM-VPS products
- Name of medicine
- Date of receipt or supply
- Batch number & quantity
- Name & address of supplier or recipient
- If there is a written prescription the name & address of the prescriber (also must keep a copy of the prescription)
Pharmacists can either keep all of the documents containing this information or record it in the private prescription book
Records may be kept electronically and must be kept for 5 years
Pharmacies which supply POM-V & POM-VPS must undertake an annual audit

What are the pharmacist duties regarding vet prescriptions?

A

ο Unless a transaction has been authorised in advance by a pharmacist and the person handing out the medicine is judged to be competent the physical presence of a pharmacist is required for POM-V, POM-VPS & NFA-VPS medicines to be supplied.
ο It is a legal requirement for pharmacists who supply NFA-VPS or prescribe POM-VPS medicines to:
- Advise on how to use the product safely
- Advise on any warning or contraindications on the label or packaging
- Be satisfied the recipient intends to use the medicine correctly & is competent to do so
- Prescribe or supply the minimum quantity required for treatment
