What are the different categories of veterinary medicines?
- NFA-VPS
(Non-food animals) - POM-V
(can only be prescribed with a written prescription) - POM-VPS
(can be verbal or written request) - AVM-GSL
(general sale vet medicines) - SAEs
(doesn’t require marketing authorisation) - Unauthorised
(can only be prescribes by a vet surgeon under the cascade)
What are the prescription requirements for POM-V, POM-VPS and medicines supplied under the cascade?
- Prescriber information - name, address, telephone number, qualification, signature
- Registration number of prescriber if schedule 2 or 3 CDs
- Name and address of owner
- Identification and species of animal
- Date
- Medicine information - name, quantity, dose and administration instructions (as directed is not suitable)
- Warnings and withdrawal period where appropriate
- Statement stating is was supplied under veterinary cascade if relevant
- If prescribing a CD, must state it has been prescribed for animal or herd use under the care of a vet
What are the differences between veterinary CD and human CD prescriptions?
- Vets don’t require standardised forms
- Vet prescriptions are retained for 5 years and not submitted to an NHS agency
- On vet prescriptions, 28 days supply is GMP not a legal requirement, human prescriptions can have no more than 30 days legally
What are the steps of the veterinary cascade?
- Supply within all guidelines
- A medicine with authorisation in NI can be supplied
- A medicine indicated for a different species can be considered
4a. A licenced human medicine
4b. A veterinary medicine authorised outside UK - Extemporaneous or specially manufactured medicine
What is required on the label of a dispensed veterinary medication?
- Name of prescriber
- Name and address of animal owner
- Name and address of pharmacy
- Identification and species
- Date of supply
- Expiry date
- Name or description of the product/ active ingredients/ content quantity
- Dosage and administration instructions
- Special storage instructions where appropriate
- Necessary warnings
- Withdrawal period
- For animal treatment only
- Keep out of reach of children
What should be in the records kept following supply of a POM-V or POM-VPS?
- Name of medicine
- Date
- Batch number
- Quantity
- Name and address of supplier or recipient
- Name and address of prescriber (POM-V) and keep copy of the prescription
