What are the Steps in a Comprehensive Dental and Oral Evaluation and Cleaning?
Steps in Comprehensive Dental and Oral Evaluation and Cleaning
1. Examination of the patient for occlusion prior to intubating
2. Rinsing the mouth with dilute chlorhexidine after the patient is anesthetized and is stable
3. Examination of the oral and pharyngeal cavity, charting calculus and gingivitis levels, abnormal probing depth, and any tooth or soft tissue abnormalities
4. Taking full mouth radiographs
5. Supra- and subgingival calculus removal – dental removal forceps, ultrasonic and hand scaling
6. Polishing the tooth surface to prevent calculus build-up in the tooth surface roughened by scaling
7. Application of dental sealants and/or fluoride
8. Remember to remove any material packed in the pharyngeal area before waking the patient
