AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association
Accredits college training programs for Veterinarians and Veterinary Technician
Veterinary Practice Act
Allows each state the power to license and regulate the practice of Veterinary Medicine through a Set Of Laws
Veterinary Medical Board
A Group of veterinarians appointed by the govenor to oversee the practice of Veterinary Medicine within that particular state
International Counsel for Veterinary Assessment
Oversees the national licensing exams
All State Practice Acts Require the following
- Veterinarians must grduate from an AVMA-Accredited school of Veterinary Medicine and pss exams which include State Exam as well as North American Veterinary Licensing Exam. (NAVLE)
- Only a licensed Veterinarian may diagnose disease, perform surgery and prescribe medications.
- The Vet Tech and other supporting staff must work under the direct supervision of a licensed Doctor of Veterinary Medicine
Credentialed Veterinary Technician
An individual who has completed the AVMA-CVTEA accredited college program for Veterinary Technology and Has Passed the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE)
Committee On Veterinary Technician Education Amd Activities (CVTEA)
An AVMA committee who accredits Veterinary Technology programs
Registed Licensed Certified
Different States use these to identify Veterinary Technitians who have met state practice act requirements
Veterinary Technician
An individual who has graduated from a 2 year AVMA-CVTEA Accreditied program but has not yet completed state licensure
Veterinary Technologist
An individual who has graduated a AVMA-CVTEA accredited 4 year program but has not obtained state licensure
Approved Veterinary Assistant (AVA)
A individual who has graduated from a NAVTA approved veterinary assistant program and has passed the Approved Veterinary Assistant Examintion
Veterinary Assistant
Individuals who provide animal care but require less training and fewer skills than Veterinary Technicians
Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)
A division of the US department of justice, is a federal law enforcement agency charged with enforcing thw Controlled Substance Act
Controlled Substance Act
A federal law that controls the manufacture, purchase, and distribution of certian medications
Controlled Substances Act Can Be Summarized As Follows
- Vets must obtain a license to purchase, use or dispense controlled substances
- Controlled Substances must be kept in a double locked area
- Detailed written records must be kept of any use of Controlled Substances
- Written records must be kept for 5 years
- Inventory must be taken every 2 years
US Department of Labor
Governs issues that affect workers on the job
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
OSHA’S charge is to enforce laws protecting workers from workplace hazards
OSHA’S Requirements of Employers Can be summarized As Follows
- Display Job safety and health protection posters
- Record occupational injuries and illnesses
- Provide Written Plans For job safety and health
- Train employees in proper procedures
- Provide personal Protective Equipment for employees
Food And Drug Administration (FDA)
Concerned with regulations that ensure safe and effective food, drugs and medical devices
US Department Of Agriculture (USDA)
Oversees several agencies that regulate the Veterinary Industry
The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS)
Charged with enforcing the Animal Welfare Act
The Food Safety Inspection Servic3 (FSIS)
Charged with ensuring that meat and poultry products are safe and correctly labeled
Animal Welfare Act
A group of federal laws designed to ensure that laboratory animals receive the best possible care. Law also applies to breeders who supply animals for research or education
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
Enforced regulations primarily aim to reduce environmental pesticide contamination
Practice
Refers to the exercise of the profession. The place where Veterinarians work.
Small Animal Private Veterinary Practice
Most veterinary practices treat family pets or companion animals as well as some small animals
Veterinary Referral Practice
These Veternarians specialize in one aspect of animal care
Other vets typically refer their patients to a specialist when they need advanced or specialized care
Large Animal Practice
Veterinarians that work eclusively with farm animals
Mixed Animal Practice
Refers to a clinic that treats both small and large animals.
Outpatient Procedures
Involve short-term admission of patients for the duration of the procedure and recovery. All of these patients are discharged (Sent home) by the end of the workday
Inpatient Procedures
Require the patient to be admitted to a vet hospital overnight. Patients who are hospitalized for medical treatments are also considered inpatient
