Vestibulocochlear Nerve VIII Flashcards
Auditory information is distributed (unilaterally/bilaterally)?
Bilaterally
Unilateral lesions of CNS auditory structures (do/do not) result in unilateral deafness?
Do not
Damage to eh VIII or both cochlear nuclei will result in what?
IPSILATERAL deafness
How is the entire system organized?
Tonotopically
Where is the ultimate goal of the Auditory Pathways? ie. What is Broadmann’s Area 41 and 42 called?
Transverse Temporal Gyri of Heschl
—Superior surface of the superior temporal gyrus within the lateral sulcus
Cross communication takes place between sides before arriving at cortex and allows the ability to what?
Localize sound to one side
The cochlear nerve consists of axons/central processes of neurons bringing in what?
Afferent information to the inner ear
The afferent info brought in via the cochlear nerve enters the brainstem where?
Cerebellopontine angle
After the cochlear nerve has brought afferent information in to the Cerebellopontine angle of the brain stem what happens?
It bifurcates to synapse in BOTH the dorsal and ventral cochlear nuclei
Where are the dorsal and ventral cochlear nuclei located?
In the rostral (open) medulla, adjacent to the base of the inferior cerebellar peduncle
Name the order of the landmarks of the ascending system, starting with 1.) Dorsal and Ventral Cochlear nuclei?
- ) Dorsal and Ventral Cochlear nuclei
- ) Superior olivary nucleus
- ) Lateral Lemniscus
- ) Nucleus of inferior colliculus
- ) Brachium of inferior colliculus
- ) Medial Geniculate nulcues
- ) Primary auditory cortex
How is the superior olivary nucleus important/play a role in protective auditory reflexes?
Superior Olivary Nucleus projects to CN VII Stapedius muscle dampening noise at the stapes, AND CN V - tensor tympani muscle, dampening the noise at the malleus
What is an Acoustic Neuroma?
A tumor growing in the cerebellopontine angle, usually benign and beginning on the VIIIth nerve
How does a acoustic neuroma affect the Vestibular component?
irritative lesion that changes perception of head position causing spinning sensation and vertigo
What is Tinnitus?
Ringing of the ears…and irritative lesion
