Vestibular System Flashcards

1
Q

What are the 3 pieces of the sense of balance?

A

1.) Activity in muscles and joints that send information to the brain to allow you to resist the pull of gravity
2.) Visual System
3.) Vestibular System

Q

What is the ampulla?

A

A widening at the end of the semicircular canal.
It detects head rotation

Q

What is the cupula?

A

A gel structure inside the ampulla
It helps sense the position of your head and the orientation of your body in space

11
Q

What is the role of endolymph in the semicircular canals?

A

The fluid gets in the ampulla and pushes the cupula in one direction or the other, depending on which way you’re moving

Q

Where are stereocilia found?

A

Inside the cupula and connected to vestibular hair cells

13
Q

What happens if you displace the cupula?

A

You put shearing force on the stereocilia, and the process opens up ion channels, which release neurotransmitter into the synapse, sending information about rotational dimensions outside of the VS into more central areas of the brain

16
Q

What kind of movement do the Utricle and Saccule deal with?

A

Linear movement

17
Q

What does the Utricle do?

A

Primarily gives information about front/back and side to side movement

18
Q

What do the Saccule do?

A

Primarily gives information about up/down movement

19
Q

What are the 3 layers of the Utricle/Saccule?

A

1.) Bottom layer is a mesh that has hair cell bodies
2.) Middle layer is a gel that has stereocilia in it
3.) Top layer which has crystals

20
Q

What are other names for the crystals?

A

Otoliths or Otoconia

21
Q

What is the purpose of the crystals?

A

The crystals add weight to the gel layer that allows it to more easily get pushed around in the fluid current.
They improve the movability of the gel layer with the stereocilia in it to create the process of the shearing force
