Vestibular Outcome Measures Flashcards
Static Postural Stability Outcome Measures
Berg, functional reach, mCTSIB, balance error scoring system (BESS), balance evaluation system test (BEST), single leg stance
Dynamic postural stability outcome measures
4 square step test, DGI, FGA, TUG, 10m walk, 5xSTS, 30sSTS
Function/Participation Outcome Measures
Dizziness handicap inventory, ABC scale
Romberg
Feet together, arms crossed preferred, EO then EC, 30-60s is normal
Assess sway and balance rxns
Sharpened Romberg
Tandem stance, arms crossed, 30s is normal
Observe for sway and balance rxns
SLS Normative Values
20-24: 28.8s EO, 20.7s EC
50-59: 24.2s EO, 6.1s EC
60-69: 27.1 EO, 2.0s EC
70-79: 18.2 EO, 1.0s EC
MCTSIB (modified clinical test of sensory integration for balance)
Postural control under various sensory conditions: firm and foam, EO and EC
Goal = 30s, document LOB
Determine between visual, proprioceptive and vestibular dependency/deficiency
4 square step test
Patient steps right, back, left, forward and then back, right, forward, left
> 12 s = at risk for falls
DGI
Assess ability to modify balance while walking w external demands, 8 components
< 19/24 =predictive of fall risk in community dwelling elderly
MCID: 2pts
FGA
Modified DGI, better reliability and less ceiling effect, 10 components
< 22/30 =predictive of fall risk in community dwelling elderly
MCID: 2-4pts
Berg balance scale
14 items of static/dynamic balance
<45 may indicate fall risk, 56 is best score
<40 is definite fall risk
10m walk test
2m acceleration, 6m testing, 2m deceleration to assess gait speed
TUG
From chair and back, 10 ft
>13.5s =fall risk
>11.1s =fall risk with vestibular disorders
5xSTS
<60Y = 10sec is fall risk
>60Y = 14.2sec is fall risk
MCID: 2.3s in vestibular population
Modified motion sensitivity quotient
Measures motion provoked dizziness during movement.
Score=(# of provocative positions x combined score for all mvmts) / 14
0-10% is mild, 11-30% is moderate, 31-100% is severe
Dizziness handicap inventory
25 items to assess self perceived handicapping effect of dizziness, 0-100%
0-30 is mild, 31-60 is moderate, 61-100 is severe
MCID: 17-18pts in vestibular population
ABC Balance Scale
Self report measure of balance confidence w various activities, 0-100%
<67% indicates fall risk
