Vertical Dynamics & Hunting Flashcards

1
Q

How did rails and wheel design differ from theearly made train design?

A

Wheel shape has changed - coinicity (incline) of the top of the wheel and the rail is placed on a slight angle to match this.

Q

Why did the change in rail/wheel design occur

A

Low speed travel the old design was fine

Faster trains encountered problems between the wheel flange and rail impacting and damaging.

Q

What effect does hunting have? and why is it a problem?

A

Hunting resorts in violent motion of the train with much higher frequency oscillations.
Nuisance for passengers and damaging to both track and its components.
