Purpose - instill hope, self-worth and mental & emotional relief Characteristics - Metaphorical and allegorical Biblical allusions, call and response, varied rhythmic patterns Impact - influenced jazz, blues, and R&B. Inspired poets. Guided slaves to free states and Canada.
