What is the context of vergissmeinnicht?

The author comes across the rotting body of a German who ,only a few weeks before, hit their tank with his artillery gun. They find a photo of the Germans gf. The poem conveys both the horridic violence of war as well as the way it changes and dehumanises all who experience it.
