A part of speech that tells what the subject is or will be doing
Verbs
A type of verb that expresses physical or mental activity
Action
Links or connects the subject to a word or word group that identifies the predicate nominative
linking
Helps the main verb express action or a state of being. A verb phrase contains one main verb and one or more of these
Helping
an action verb that directs an action toward a person, place, thing, or an idea
Transitive
an action verb that doesn’t direct the action toward an object. It only tells what the subject is doing.
Intransitive
complete the meaning of the simple subject and the verb.
Complements
noun/pronoun in the complete predicate that follows a transitive action verb and tells who/what receives the action of the verb
direct object
located between the transitive action verb and the direct object; tells to
who/what or for whom/what the action done (recipient of the direct object)
Indirect object
noun/pronoun in the complete predicate that follows a linking verb and renames the subject
Predicate nominative
adjective in the complete predicate that follows a linking verb and describes the subject
