- Whilst “evangelical” can describe people in a particular movement of Christianity
- it can otherwise be used to describe people who are so passionate or supportive of a particular cause that they want to promote it to others. Typically they would promote their cause to others.
A lapse
refers to a short period of time (“There was a lapse of time between the first and second film.”), or a momentary failure in judgement or concentration. (“A lapse in concentration cost her the competition.”)
To lapse means to pass into a worse state. (“I was raised a Catholic…but I lapsed as soon as / left home.”)
Sceptical
If someone is “sceptical” of something, they doubt its validity.
Ingrid doesn’t do any yoga, in fact she’s quite sceptical of it as a form of exercise.
She says it doesn’t make her tired enough!

The thing is..
We can use this expression to indicate that there is a problem with something good or satisfying that has just been discussed.
Ex: I would love to spend time with you this weekend, but, the thing is, I can’t spend too much money.
Ex: He’s a really great guy, but the thing is, there’s just no spark between us.
Put off
Turn off as verb
A verb to know when you want to describe things which make something or someone seem unattractive.
Ex: I went on a date with someone yesterday. It was going great until I discovered they smoked and that put me off pursuing a relationship with them.
Ex: I wanted to adopt a pet, but after looking after my neighbour’s dog for a week / was put off - it’s a lot more hard work than I realised!
Ex: The job sounds good on paper, but what puts me off is the company culture - it feels very outdated.
Don’t get me wrong
Common and useful expression in both work and social contexts
- We might say it when we want to be sure that someone doesn’t misunderstand or misinterpret something. This is how Sofia uses the phrase.
2.Sometimes we might need to tell someone something that might be uncomfortable to hear or cause offence and using this phrase can soften the message.

It’s very rare to like every single thing about the people close to you. You can appreciate some things about someone, but also be put off by others!
Don’t get me wrong we have great times together, but the thing is, he is too relaxed for me.
