Q

A reflexive verb in Italian is a verb that ends in -si in its infinitive form (the “to” form). The -si in the infinitive is a reflexive pronoun and can be translate as “to self” or “to oneself” and it expresses that there is a reflection of the action on the subject.

For the verbs ending in -are, -ere, and -ire, simply drop the “e” and add -si to make the infinitive reflexive form.

Try creating the reflexive from the following:

  • svegliare
  • sedere
  • vestire
A

Reflexive forms:

svegliare → svegliarsi

sedere → sedersi

vestire → vestirsi

**keep in mind that not all verbs can be turned into reflexive verbs. Some are only reflexive, some can be turned into reflexive, and some can be used in their non reflexive form.

30
Q

What are the reflexive pronouns? (io, tu, lui, etc.)

A

Io → mi → myself

Tu → ti → yourself

Lui/lei → si → himself/herself

Noi → ci → ourselves

Voi → vi → yourselves

Loro → si → theirselves

31
Q

To conjugate a reflexive verb in the present simply follow this formula:

Subject + reflexive pronoun + verb conjugate in the present tense.

Try to conjugate this example: Svegliarsi - to wake (oneself) up

A

io mi sveglio → I wake myself up

tu ti svegli → You wake yourself up

lui si sveglia → He wakes himself up

lei si sveglia → She wakes herself up

noi ci svegliamo → We wake ourselves up

voi vi svegliate → You wake yourselves up.

loro si svegliano → They wake themselves up.

32
Q

If the reflexive verb is being used in the infinitive form, the pronoun is attached to the verb.

For example: Rilassarsi - to relax (oneself)

In vacanza voglio rilassar___. (what ending would you choose?)

A

In vacanza voglio rilassarmi - On vacation I want to relax (myself).

33
Q

When do you use reflexive verbs?

A

When the subject, and the object are the same person.

For example: I wash myself → Io mi lavo

I (subject) wash (verb - action) myself (object).

The subject and object are both me.

When the subject and object are not the same, you simply use the non reflexive form.

For example: I wash the plates → Io lavo i piatti.

I (subject) wash (verb) the plates (object)

The subject and object are different.
