Gerund
a form that is derived from a verb but that functions as a noun, in English ending in -ing.
Infinitive
the basic form of a verb, without an inflection binding it to a particular subject or tense.
Participles
a word formed from a verb and used as an adjective or a noun. In English, participles are also used to make compound verb forms.
Phrase
a small group of words standing together as a conceptual unit, typically forming a component of a clause.
What are the 3 types of Verbals?
There are three kinds of verbals: participles, gerunds, and infinitives. The participle is a verb form used as an adjective.
What do Gerunds function as?
A gerund is a verbal that ends in -ing and functions as a noun. The term verbal indicates that a gerund, like the other two kinds of verbals, is based on a verb and therefore expresses action or a state of being.
What do Infinitives function as?
An infinitive is a verbal consisting of the word to plus a verb and functioning as a noun, adjective, or adverb. However, the infinitive may function as a subject, direct object, subject complement, adjective, or adverb in a sentence
What do Participles function as?
A participle is a verbal ending in -ing (present) or -ed, -en, -d, -t, -n, or -ne (past) that functions as an adjective, modifying a noun or pronoun. A participial phrase consists of a participle plus modifier(s), object(s), and/or complement(s).
Gerunds Examples
1) Swimming in the ocean has been Sharon’s passion since she was five years old.
2) Let’s go dancing at the club tonight.
Participles Examples
1) We shall go to a Broncos game!
2) The Broncos game we went to ended up with the Broncos losing cause they suck and dont have a real QB (i’m pretty sure this one isn’t right but its funny)
