Rules of SVA
A
- Titles of books, movies, somgs, etc. are SINGULAR
- Remove prepositional phrases after the subject.
Ex: The tray of cookies looks delicious. (remove of cookies) - Remove prepositional phrases before the subject.
- The verb agrees with the subject of the sentence
- Two or more subjects joined by ‘and’ are considered plural.
- If the subjects are joined by ‘or’, ‘nor’, or ‘but’, the verb must agree with the subject that is closest to it.
- For sentences that start with ‘here is/are’, ‘there is/are’, look ahead to determine the subject.
- Indefinite pronouns have different rules on number.
- Some nouns are always plural/always singular
