Present Simple
Used to describe routines or facts.
I wake up early every day. (ROUTINE)
I live in Rio de Janeiro. (FACT)
Past Simple
Completed actions in the past. Used when we know when it happened.
I ate an apple yesterday.
Present Continuous
Used to describe something in progress or temporary.
I am eating now. (in progress)
I am living in São Paulo. (temporary)
Present Perfect
Used to describe:
- Something that started in the past and continues in the present.
- I’ve been a teacher for most of my life. - Something that happened in the past, when the action is more important than when it happened.
- I’ve done my homework. - Something that happened recently, with still apparent results.
- I’ve caught a lot of rain. - Something that serves as an experience.
- I’ve seen all the Star Wars films.
Past Perfect
Used to describe something that happened before another event in the past.
I had already made dinner (5:30pm) when she arrived(6pm).
Past Perfect Continuous
Used to describe an action that was in progress before an event in the past.
When I opened the window (6am) I noticed it had been raining (4am to 5:50am).
Present Perfect Continuous
Used to describe actions that started in the past and continues in the present.
I have been having English classes for a year now.
Past Continuous
Used to describe actions that were in progress in the past.
I was living in Belo Horizonte.
I was working all day long yesterday.
I was watching a film when the phone rang.
