Expresses an event or situation that exists now or that usually, always or often exists.
Water boils at 100 °C.
Simple present
Expresses an event or situation that began and ended in the past.
He ate supper last night at 7:30.
Simple past
Expresses an event or situation that will happen at one particular time in the future.
He will eat dinner tomorrow night at 7:30
Simple future
Give the idea that an event or situation is in progress during a particular time.
The continuous tenses
Give the idea that one event happens or happened before another time or event
The perfect tenses
Son acciones del PASADO que tienen IMPORTANCIA en el PRESENTE.
Subject+ have/has + verb in p.p.+ complement.
I have lived here for such a long time.
Yo he vivido aquí por mucho tiempo.
Present perfect
Cuando la acción en el presente aún no ha terminado
Subject + am/is/are + present participle + complement.
I am living here now.
Yo estoy viviendo aquí ahora.
Present continuous
Cuando la acción empezada en el pasado ha CONTINUADO hasta ahora.
I have been waiting for you for such a long time.
Te he estado esperando por mucho tiempo.
Present perfect continuous
Acción que ocurre antes de otra acción en el pasado subject + had + verb in p.p. + complement.
I had never seen such a beautiful beach before I went to Hawai
Nunca he visto playa tan hermosa desde que fui a Hawai
Past perfect
Una acción continua interrumpida en el pasado.
Subject + was /were + verb (-ing) + complement.
I was watching tv. when he called.
Yo estaba viendo la tv. Cuando el llamó.
Past continuous
La acción continúa hasta que se realiza otra acción en el pasado.
Subject + had + verb to be in p.p. + verb in present participle + complement
They had been talking for over an hour before tony arrived.
Ellos han estado hablando por una hora antes de que tony llegara.
Past perfect continuous
Acción que ocurre antes de otra acción en el futuro.
“Will”:
Sujeto + will + have + verb in p.p. + comp.
By next november I will have received my promotion.
Para el próximo noviembre yo habré recibido mi promoción.
“Going to” :
Sujeto + are/ am / is going to + have + verb in p.p + comp.
By the time I get home, you are going to have cleaned the entire house!
Future perfect
Acción que continúa en el futuro.
“Will”
You will be waiting for her when her plane arrives tonight.
Tu estarás esperándola cuando su avión despegue en la noche.
“Going to be”
You are going to be waiting for her when her plane arrives tonight.
Future continuous
La acción continúa hasta alguna otra acción en el futuro.
“Will”:
They will have been talking for over an hour by the time Thomas arrives.
Ellos habrán estado hablando durante 1 hora para cuando Thomas llegue.
“Going to”
We are going to have been driving for over three days straight when we get to anchorage.
