What does Sheresh mean?
Sheresh(שֶׁרֶשׁ) is Strong’s #H83280 and it means Root
All the Hebrew verbs have a Root Form
What does Binyan/Binyanim mean?
Binyan/Binyanim comes from the Hebrew Verb Banah(בָנָה) which is Strong’s #H11290 and it means to Build
So that’s why the verb conjugations are referred to as the “Binyan/Binyanim” because we are building off of the Root form of the verb
What does Pa’al (פָּעַל) mean?
Pa’al which is Strong’s #H64660
means “To make” or “To do”
What does Qal (קַל) mean?
Qal(קַל) which is Strong’s #70310
and it means “light/swift”
It’s contracted from the verb Qalal(קָלַל)
which is Strong’s #70430 and it means
“light(weight), fast, easy”
The Qal form of a verb is the most SIMPLE root form.
Some examples are
אָכַל -Eat
אָמַר - Say
דָּבַר - Speak

Pa’al and Niphal are Simple
Example verb כָּתַב “To Write”
Pa’al - פָּעַל - He wrote
Niphal - נִפְעַל - It was written

Causative is when someone or something is causing an action to be done
Hiphil and Hophal/Huphal are Causative
Example verb כָּתַב “To Write”
Hiphil - הִכְתִּיב - He dictated, He Caused the action of writing to be done
Hophal - הָכְתַּב - It was dictated, the writing of the document was dictated by…
Sometimes Hophal is seen as Huphal,
So you’ll see it as - הוּכְתַּב or הֻכְתַּב
What does Factitive mean?
sometimes referred to as “Intensive”
Which verb forms are Factitive?
Factitive is when someone or something causes something to come into a state of being
Piel and Pual are Factitive
Example verb כָּתַב “To Write”
Piel - כִּיתֵּב or כִּתֵּב - He engraved
Pual - כּוּתַּב - It was engraved
someone caused that stone tablet to come into a state of being engraved
Another example would be from Exodus 20:8 regarding the Sabbath Day
Example Verb קָדַשׁ “To Be Set-Apart”
“Remember The Sabbath Day
To Set It Apart”
זָכוֹר אֶת־יוֹם הַשַּׁבָּת לְקַדְּשׁוֹ
It’s a Piel form of the verb “Qadash” to keep the Sabbath Day in a state of being Set-Apart

Reflexive is when you’re causing something to be done to yourself
Hithpael is Reflexive

What does Active mean?
The Subject(person or animal etc.) does the action

What does Passive mean?
The Subject(person or animal etc.) receives the action
