Savoir vs Connaître

A

Savoir – used when there’s another verb involved

Je sais faire du feu – I know how to build a fire

Je ne sais pas – I don’t know

Connaître – used with a direct object (person, place or thing)

Je connais bien le français – I know a lot of French

Est-ce que tu connais Tom – Do you know Tom?

When both words can be used:
- To know a bit of information (date, number etc)
- To have something memorised

Meanings of Savoir and Connaître in passé composé
- Savoir = To learn; to find out
- Connaître = To meet
