Ventilation In Insects Flashcards
Insects do not possess a transport system, therefore O2 has to be transported directly to tissues / cells undergoing mitosis. Why is this?
As they have a tough exoskeleton through which little exchange can occur
How do insects transport their O2 then
Using spiracles
Trachea
& tracheoles
What are spiracles
Small openings of tubes along the thorax / abdomen
-> these run into the body of an insect & supply it with required gases
- @ the end of each of tracheole = tracheal fluid, which allows gases to dissolve & then diffuse into cells
To avoid excessive H2O loss, what can spiracles do
Be opened & closed
Insect ventilation steps
Insect gas exchange steps
Mammal vs insect trachea
Mammals = 1 trachea vs insects = multiple
Mammals = cartikage vs insects = chitin
Mammal trachea = longer & larger diameter
