Ventilation Flashcards
1
Q
Negative pressure ventilation
A
- Patient is placed in a sealed chamber from the neck down
- A vacuum is generated causing the thorax to expand and allowing air to move into the lungs down a pressure gradient
- Not common
2
Q
Positive pressure ventilation (IPPV)
A
- Fresh gas is forced into the patients airway in a controlled manner
- May be delivered manually (bagging) or by using a mechanical ventilator
3
Q
IPPV- INDICATIONS
A
- Hypoventilation (falling sp02 levels, pulmonary disease, too deep anaesthesia, opiods)
- Apnoea
- Thoracic surgery
- CNS disease/injury
4
Q
MECHANICAL VENTILATORS
A
- Allow more accurate ventilation than manual IPPV
- Pressure of gas reaching patients lungs can be controlled (reducing risk of trauma)
