Ventilation Flashcards
1
Q
Describe positive pressur eventilation
A
Intermittently inflating the lungs via a positive pressure, delivered by a ventilator and an endotrachel tube or tracheostomy
2
Q
What are the beneficial effects of PPV?
A
Improved CO2 elimination
Relief from exhaustion
Effects on oxygenation - useful in severe parenchymal disease, where there is significant effort ot breath
3
Q
What are the indications for PPV?
A
Acute respiratory failure Acute ventilatory failure Head injury Prophylactic postoperative ventilation Trauma Severe LV failure with pulmonary oedema Coma with breathing difficulties
4
Q
What are some risks of PPV?
A
Airway complications Disconnection Failure o fpwer supply Mechanical faults CVS complications - +ve pressure stretches the alveoli, increases pulmonary vascular resistance and therefore decreases venous return V/Q mismatch Pneumothorax Subcutaneous emphysema
5
Q
What are the indications for non-invasive ventilation?
A
Respiratory acidossi between 7.25 and 2.35
Type 2 resp failure secondary to: neuromuscular disorder, obstructive sleep apnoea or chest wall deformity
Cardiogenic pulmonary oedema unresponsive to CPAP
