ventilation Flashcards
describe the process of inhalation
the thorax volume increases, so the air pressure drops causing air to be pulled into the lungs until the pressure it is equal to atmospheric.
describe the muscle actions during inhalation
intercostal muscles pull the ribcage up and out
the diaphragm contracts
describe the process of exhalation
the thorax volume decreases, so the air pressure increases, forcing air out of the lungs until the pressure is equal to atmospheric
describe the muscle actions during exhalation
intercostal muscles and diaphragm relax
what concentration of oxygen is in inhaled air
high (low carbon)
concentration of oxygen in exhaled air
low( high carbon)
how is the rate of diffusion increased?
a constantly high oxygen concentration gradient allows diffusion to occur at all times
