Ventilation
The systematic removal of heat, smoke and fire gases from a structure and replacing fresh air using selected and controlled channels
Positive pressure ventilation (ppv)
A technique that forces fresh air into a structure with high volume fans to create a higher pressure inside the building than the outside. By systematically opening doors and windows to channel the pressurized clean air, you can effectively ventilate smoke, heat and gases out of a structure
Characteristics of smoke:
Volume, velocity, density and color
Smoke volume is an
Indicator of the amount of fuels that are “off gassing” within a given space
Velocity is the
Speed and flow characteristics of smoke leaving a building
Smoke density is
Indicative of the amount of fuel that is laden within the smoke. The greater the density, the more likely a hostile event like a flashover or rapid fire spread can occur
Smoke color can tell the firefighter
Which stage of burning is taking place or where the fire is within the building
