Q

Describe the three stage ventilation on an AFU.

A

Pre-particulate filter - paper filter which removes course particulate matter including radioactive fallout.

Particulate filter - Glass fibre filter designed to remove bacteria by entrapment.

Gas filter - Removes all known chemical warfare agents in the form of gas/vapours by activated charcoal filling.

16
Q

What is the Citadel?

A

A whole ship CBRN shelter.
Formed by closing the ship down to increased gas tight state.
Works by increasing the atmospheric pressure using air filtered by AFU’s

17
Q

When would the citadel be tested?

A

Annually
Prior to DED
During harbour acceptance trials (HATS)
During sea acceptance trials (SATS)
During FOST work-ups

18
Q

When would an Air Bleed Valve operate?

A

When the internal pressure exceeds 2.5” WG

19
Q

Where would a crash stop be situated, when would it be used, and when would the fans be restarted.

A

Situated in SCC or HQ1.
Used in an emergency (fire or crash on deck) to shut down all ventilation fans.
Fans can only be restarted after being checked they are clear of smoke and debris.
