vent comp Flashcards
Causes of high pressure alarm?
-increased secretions, mucous plug
-client biting et tube
-decreased lung compliance (ARDS, pulm edema, pulm hypertension)
-client anxious and fighting vent
-kinks in tubing
-bronchospasms
What are troubleshooting that can be done for high pressure alarm?
-suction
-bite block if needed
-assess breath sounds for changes and notify HCP
-sedative or neuromuscular blocking agent
What are causes of low pressure alarm?
-cuff leak or deflated
-leak in vent circuit or tubing is disconnected
-tube displacement
-client stops breathing in SIMV or PSV mode
Troubleshooting for low pressure alarm?
-Assess for cuff leak, check cuff pressure, notify RT
-assess all connections and tubing
-assess tube placement and breath sounds
-assess client
Causes for apnea alarm?
-over sedated
-neurologic or metabolic problem
Troubleshooting for apnea alarm?
Determine cause, ambu patient and notify RT to assist w vent management, manage cause of apnea
Causes of high RR alarm?
-not tolerating weaning
-neuro/metabolic problem
-anxiety
-pain
Troubleshooting for high RR alarm?
-assess and notify RT/MD
-Treat neurogenic/metabolic problems as indicated
-Reassure client, admin anxiety or pain meds
Causes of mechanical vent failure alarm?
-loss of power
-mechanical failure of vent
Troubleshooting of mechanical vent failure?
-verify plugged into red outlet, ambu client and contact RT for replacement
What is volume assist control setting?
set volume and pressure varies
What is Pressure assist control?
set pressure and volume varies
What is synchronized intermittent mandatory ventilation?
client controls volume on spontaneous breath
What is CPAP? (continuous positive airway pressure)?
no rate or tidal volume set, client controls rate and tidal volume
What is FiO2?
amount of oxygen being inhaled with breaths
What is PIP?
peak inspiratory pressure
What is PIP meaning?
amount of pressure needed to get breath to the lungs, highest pressure during inspiration cycle
What is PEEP?
positive end expiratory pressure
What does PEEP tell?
pressure applied by vent to keep alveoli open/stop from collapsing at the end of each breath
What is tidal volume?
how much air put into lungs with breath
SIgns of suctioning needed?
-auscultation of adventitious lung sounds, such as rhonchi
-sudden decrease in oxygen saturation
-excessive secretion observed
What does SIMV stand for?
synchronized intermittent mandatory ventilation
