Venous Thromboembolism Flashcards
1
Q
What system if scoring is used to identify the probability for DVT
A
Wells score
2
Q
How is an ultrasound used to identify VTE
A
The femoral vein is scanned from groin to calf
Pressure applied to probe to see if vein is compressible.
If not compressible, it is occluded
3
Q
Clinical features of PE
A
• Chest pain
• Shortness of breath
• Tachycardia
• Syncope
• Occasionally, Haemoptysis
4
Q
What test is done to test for low probability DVT and PE
A
D-Dimer
• Fibrin degradation product
• Level rises in DVT and PE due to clot burden
• Helps with decision making in low probability DVT and PE
5
Q
How to prevent VTE
A
A risk assessment is done for VTE
• Low Molecular Weight Heparin
• Compression Stockings
