What is venous reflux disease (VRD)?
A
- Incompetence of venous valves especially in legs
- May occur in superficial, deep or perforating veins of legs
- Superficial involvement may cause varicose veins

What usually causes VRD?
A
Idiopathic
May have Hx DVT (post-thrombotic limb) or raised venous pressure

What are the symptoms of VRD?
A
- Leg swelling
- Ache
- Burning
- Bad cosmetic appearance

What are the signs of VRD?
A
Ulcers Dilated tortuous superficial veins Palpable sapena varix Leg oedema Venous skin changes (see venous ulcers)

What investigations are used for VRD?
A
- Venous duplex USS
- Venography

Q
How is VRD managed?
A
Conservative
- compression hosiery
- injection sclerotherapy
Surgical (only if deep incompetence excluded)
- Ligation and stripping
- Laser ablation of superficial vein accompanied by superficial avulsions
