A

1)Don PPE if appropriate
2)Introduce yourself and confirm their details
3)Ask them how they are feeling (sorry to hear that)
4)Gain consent to proceed with venepuncture.(explain what it will involve)

How would you explain the procedure to the patient?

A

“Today I need to take a blood sample, which involves inserting a small needle into your vein. You may briefly experience a sharp scratch as the needle is inserted.”

What questions must you ask before you start?

A

While asking these questions clean the tray and gather equipment (out of date)

Any blood thinners?

Check if the patient has any allergies (e.g. latex).

Any steroids?

Which arm?

Any pain?

What 6 things must you do before inserting the needle

A

Apply tourniquet (tight?) and palpate vein

WASH HANDS

Remove tourniquet

Don gloves

Place tourniquet (tight?)

Clean area (30 seconds apply 30 seconds dry)

How do you insert the needle

A

Set up butterfly needle by applying vacuum to the end of the tube

Ensure the side of the wings with the circle is facing upwards

Clip the wings and insert. To manoeuvre only hold one wing

Insert test tube to vacuum (blood should flow)

What equipment is needed

A

Clean procedure tray.
gloves.
Tourniquet.
butterfly needle and barrel
Blood specimen bottles.
Sharps container.
Alcohol swab
Gauze or cotton wool.

How do you remove the needle

A

To remove needle hold bottom part of the needle and pull the end of the tube to retract the needle

Place in sharps bin immediately

What do you do after removing the needle

A

Apply gauze and ask patient to apply pressure

Let them know it should stop bleeding soon but if it starts bleeding again don’t panic and come in to see doctor again

Remove gloves and WASH HANDS

Clean up

A

Write patient details on bottle

Ask for request forms. Let patient know their test results will come from the lab and not you

Thank the patient for collaborating

Ask examiner if they need you to do anything else
