What makes an arm unsuitable for venipuncture?
if the arm is on the same side as mastectomy, or
is edematous, or
has an IV placed below the venipuncture site, or
has a vascular access or AV fistula, or
has a hematoma
First step to taking a venipuncture
Identify your patient, compare patient to orders, verbally confirm patient’s name and DOB
Where is the preferred site for venipunctures?
antecubital area
basilic vein
cephalic vein

What does it mean to palpate the vein?
to feel it
When you palpate the vein, what should it do?
rebound, bounce
