Causes of Velopharyngeal insufficiency:
insufficient tissue to achieve closure. Can be congenital or genetic
what is the cause of VP incompetence:
problem with movement. Can be organic or congenital (cerebral palsy) or acquired (stroke, progressive neurological disease)

incomplete fusion at midline of face; can be genetic or acquired or separate disorders but can co-exist

opening between oral and nasal cavities
What is partial cleft palate?
only hard palate or only soft palate- can be unilateral or bilateral
what is a full cleft palate?
clefting through to incisive foremen and anterior alveolar ridge
What is a submucous cleft?
soft tissue from and is joined but bony palate is not formed
What is a unilateral cleft?
incomplete closure only on one side
What is a Bilateral cleft?
incomplete closure on both sides
Are cleft lip & palate genetically the same?
causes are genetically different, but can occur

- Distortions
Does tongue and maxilla affect speech?
yes, depends on how much of the tongue is worked on
What manners of speech are affected?
fricatives and stops
