Vehicle Suspension/Tires/Steering Flashcards
Name all Suspension Spring systems
- Leaf Spring
- Torsion Bar
- Coil Spring
- Air Spring
What is sprung weight?
Anything supported by the spring
Unsprung weight is?
Weight of components not supported by springs (best rides have minimal unsprung weight)
Coil Spring Description
Spring steel wound in a circular twist, compresses and bounces back, compresses evenly for every 100 pounds
Lear spring Description
Typically used on solid axles cheap and effective (Most trucks have multi leaf system)
Mono Leaf Spring
Single spring bar, thicker in middle and thinner towards the edge
Constant rate springs
Front bracket holds leaf spring, U-bolt holds leaf spring to axle
Air spring and types?
Used on both trucks and cars, sensors determine if more air is needed in the vehicle
- Sleeve type (single air bag)
- Double Convoluted
Torsion bar
A bar that twists, compound through lateral space
Macpherson Strut suspension
Has coil spring and shock absorber in the middle
Double wish bone suspension
Has support from top and bottom named double wish bone (top is smaller then bottom support)
Wheel Construction
Steel, Magnesium, aluminum
Wheel offset (How far the drum is from the center wheel)
Rim, width, diameter, flange mounting (the bolts used)
Hub Piloted
Past 2000 washer wheel rests on hub
Stud Piloted
No washes exposed
Role of tire construction?
Good traction, absorb road shock, withstand side thrust, transfer braking, and driving torque
Name all Categories of tire Tread?
- Directional: Only meant for one direct
- Non Directional: Can go either way
- Asymetric: Different on either side of tire, used on high end cars.
Spare tires
- Matched: Normal Size tires
2. Compact spare: Smaller tire (donut or blow up)
Profile of a tire
The physical size of the tire
TPMS
Tire pressure monitoring system
What is a run flat?
Huge rubber insert to use in emergency flats (get the hell back to base)
Bogie Suspension
One axle goes up the other goes down like a scale
Torque rods
Transmit torque from axle to body of vehicle
Electronically Controlled suspension
Magneride suspension system, used on only high end cars do to its smooth comfortable ride and expensive costs
