vectors and scalars Flashcards
what is the meaning of displacement and what quantity is it and why
displacement is the distance an object moves in a straight line from a starting point to a finishing point
it’s a vector quantity because it contains SIZE AND DIRECTION
what is the meaning of distance and what type of quantity is it and why
distance is how far an object moves
its a scalar quantity because it has size but not direction
If an object travels 4 metres forwards then 2 metres backwards, what is the distance travelled? What is the objects displacement?
the distance travelled is 6 as 4 + 2 = 6
the displacement is 2 as the object is only 2 meters away from where it started
what quantity is speed and why
speed is a scalar quantity because it only has size and no direction
what quantity is velocity and why
velocity is a vector quantity as it has direction as well as speed
what do scalar quantities only have
scalar quantities only have size
what do vector quantities have
vector quantities have size and direction
which of these are vector quantities:

Jane pushes a table with a force of 10N towards the door, but her brother, Frank tries to stop her by pushing it with a force of 10 N at a right angle to Jane.
The effect of these forces is shown above.
Pythagoras’ theroem is used to work out the resultant force.
resultant for = |(10+10) = |(200) = 14.1
