Leshmaniasis
A
Organism: Leshmania spp.
Location: blood and tissues
Transmission: vector (Sandfly)
Reservoir: domestic and wild animal (opposum) Humans
Diagnosis: Biopsy, stain w/ Giemsa, look for amastigotes
Treatment:
*for cutaneous (most common) self resolving, L.Major (fluconazole)
*for Mucocutaneous (antimonials), amphotericin B
*For Viceral: serious Miltefosine (sometimes amphotericin B)
L. tropica L. major: africa asia and mid east causes cutaneus
L. brazilienes: Americas causes mucocutaneus
L donovani and L. infantum (Chagas): india causes viceral
