VDP Flashcards
VDP
Visual Descent Point
what is a VDP
a defined point on the final approach course of a NON-PRECISION STRAIGHT-IN-APPROACH procedure from which normal descent from the MDA to the runway touchdown point may begin
provided adequate visual reference is established
how is the VDP depicted on an approach chart
bold “V”
what about if you’re not equipped to identify the VDP
fly the approach as if no VDP was even published
don’t do what before reaching the VDP
do not decent below the MDA prior to reaching the VDP
can you descend below the MDA before the VDP even if you can see visually?
no
how to calculate VDP when it’s not published by DISTANCE
VDP (NM from threshold) = MDH / 300
ex: MDH is 600’
VDP = 600’ / 300
VDP = 2NM from threshold
how to calculate VDP when it’s not published by TIME
MDH / 10 = seconds to subtract from time between FAF and MAP
ex: MDH = 500’, FAF to MAP is 4:00, when would u be at the VDP to start descending?
500’ / 10 = 50 seconds —> 4:00 - 0:50 = 3:10
start descent at 3:10 (time from FAF)
