Maury / Banyuls terms
* Grenat / rimage ->unaged red.
* Tuile / tradiitonel – red wine, oxydativelt
* Ambré - white matured oxydtively
* Hors d’age – more oxydative aging than tuilé and ambre. Red and white
* Rancio – red or white with rancio characer
VDN Languedoc basics
All from MPG and unaged style.
Muscat de Frontignan - low altitude and warm
Muscat de St-Jean de Minervois -> 250-300 m of altitude, cooler. Higher acidity, lighter body. Stone fruit and floral aromas.
VDN Rhone basics
Muscat de Beaumes – de- Venise. -> planted on terraces on the South east facing slopes of dentelles de montmirail which provde shelter from Mistral.
Majority MPG
Also some rose from MPG rouge.
Always unaged and low alcohol (15%). Protective winemaking so blossom, honey, grape, peach
Vin doux naturel rasteau
Red - rose – white. Unaged or oxydative. Mosty red. Min 75% grenache noir. Blanc and gris can be blended in.
South facing slope -> max exposure to sunlight and protectin from mistral.
Grapes easily become very ripre for fortified production.
Unaged-> cherries plums
Oxydative -> dried fruit, nutty hints.
16-18% alcohol
Winemaking VDN
Produced by adding spirit to stop fermentation to have sweet fortified wine.
Minimum sugar concentration 100-125 g/l muscat based
45 g/l for Grenache based though in practice many of them 100 g/l.m
Neutral spirit of 95 – 96% of alcohol.
Spirit addedn when 5-6% abv to reach 15-18%. Only 5-10% of the volüme is spririt so not a lot of spririty character.

VDN Roussillon AOC
Banyuls AOC
Red win min %50 Grenache N. Steep terraces on schist slopes. Small amount of white VDN.
Banyuls Grand Cru AOC
Same area, only red, min %75 of GN , matured min of 30 months. Longer aging = Hors d’age or Rancio
Maury AOC
Foothill of Pyreness, 100-300 of altitude, dark schist which reflects hat. Min %75 GN. Small amount of unaged whites.
Muscat de Rivesaltes AOC
Largest by volume. Unaged. Blend of MPG and MA
Rivesaltes AOC
Range of VDN styles Both red and white made in 5 styles.
Whites min %20 of muscat varieties, rest GB, GG, Macabeu.
