Capitulum rectanglar, scutum ornamented, short mouth, posterior anal groove, has festoons
Transmits: Borrelia burgdorferi (Lyme), Rocky Mountain spotted fever, St. Louis encephalitis virus
*Can cause tick paralysis
Amblyomma -
americanum (Lone Star)
maculatum (Gulf coast)
variegatum (Bont tick)

Transmits: Cytauxzoon felis
*Americanum transmits: Borrelia burgdorferi (Lyme)

Transmits: Borrelia burgdorferi (Lyme), Anaplasma, +some human stuff

(Brown Dog tick or Kennel tick)
capitulum hexagonal, scutum not ornamented, has festoons
Transmits: Babesia canis, Ehrlichia canis
*Can cause tick paralysis
Rhipicephalus annulatus
(Boophilus annulatus)
(Texas cattle fever tick or Blue Cattle tick)
capitulum hexagonal, scutum not ornamented, NO festoons (Remember - sanguineus does)
Transmits: bovine piroplasmosis (Texas Cattle Fever)
*must be reported in the US lol
Haemaphysalis
(Rabbit tick or Yellow Dog tick)
scutum not ornamented, has festoons
minor importance in North America
Neospora caninum
Coccida!
Intermediate hosts: cattle, sheep, goat
Final host: dog
Dog becomes infected when ingests bradyzoites or tissue cysts
- most severely affected in transplacentally
-progressive ascending paralysis (particularly hind limbs)
- gray matter most severely affected
Toxoplasma gondii
Coccidia!
Sporulated oocysts infective on ingestion
No-see-um flies
(Ceratopogonidae)
Also called biting midges
Vectors for more than 50 arboviruses !!!!
- (Ex. Eastern Equine Encephalitis, Bluetongue in sheep, African horse sickness)
