Vasoactive Meds - VASODILATORS Flashcards
Nitroglycerin (NTG)
~direct vasodilator
~venodilation (reduces R and L
ventricular preload and afterload)
~dilates coronary arteries
NTG side effects
HpTN, HA, nitrate tolerance (ppl need an “off” period)
Sodium Nitroprusside
has a more balanced effect on the arteries and veins
Sodium Nitroprusside side effects
thiocyanate toxicity (tinnitus, abd pain, weakness, agitation, disorientation, lethargy, seizures, coma) if on it for longer than 48*.
Nesiritide (Natrecor)
~identical to endogenous BNP
~causes vasodilation and natriuresis
and diuresis
Calcium Channel Blockers
Some are stronger AV node blockers where they will slow down the HR and some are stronger vasodilators such as nicardipine which is useful in a HTN emergency
