Deep venous thrombosis

A

Risk factors:

  1. Prolonged immobility or hospitalization
  2. Recent major surgery
  3. Obesity
  4. Malignancy
  5. OCP use
  6. Pregnancy
  7. Drug injection (most common at iliofemoral vein = wall trauma, chemical irritation, or infection)

Clinical:

  1. Unilateral leg swelling
  2. Pain & warmth
  3. Physical exam: dilated superficial veins & increase diameter of calf or thigh

Diagnosis:

  1. Low risk: via D-Dimer
  2. High risk: via Doppler US
