What is an angiosarcoma?
Malignant proliferation of endothelial cells (cells lining blood vessels) - highly aggressive
What are common sites for angiosarcomas?
Skin, breast and liver
What is Liver angiosarcoma associated with?
Exposure to polyvinyl chloride (PVC), arsenic, and Thorotrast
What is Kaposi Sarcoma?
Low-grade malignant proliferation of endothelial cells
What is Kaposi Sarcoma associated with?
HHV-8
What does Kaposi Sarcoma present with?
Purple patches, plaques, and nodules on skin
-May also involve visceral organs
What three populations is Kaposi Sarcoma often seen in?
- Older Eastern European males - tumor remains localized to skin; treatment involves surgical removal
- AIDS - tumor spreads early - treatment is antiretroviral agents (to boost immune system)
- Transplant recipients - tumor spreads early - treatment involves decreasing immunosuppression
